X.400: Put an end to Computer Disparity

Today, business is more complex than ever before.  Competition,
occurring on a world wide basis, is becoming fiercer.  Business
decisions need to be made quickly and with the best available
information.

To face these challenges, companies have decentralized their national
and international operations to better meet business and market needs.
As a result, many companies have purchased a variety of computing
systems running a variety of operating systems.  This situation has
resulted in computer disparity: a lack of communication between
computing systems and the people who use them.  X.400 provides one way
to help improve communications in this environment.

The first step for many companies has been to install X.400 gateways in
an effort to get their existing electronic mail systems to "talk" to
each other.  However, as the amount of information flowing across these
gateways increases, the number of gateways can grow to unmanageable
levels.  The solution to help simplify a network of gateways is to

Why X.400 for a messaging backbone?

As a standard, X.400 will provide your network with the widest possible
connectivity.  Almost all major computer vendors support the X.400
standard, making X.400 the common denominator for multivendor
electronic messaging.

An X.400 backbone reduces the number of proprietary protocols in a
network and helps eliminate the use of gateways that translate from one
proprietary protocol to another.  By using standards, existing
proprietary subnets can easily communicate with one another by using a
single, common protocol to connect to the backbone.

The use of a common language eliminates computer disparity, simplifies
administration of the network and also helps facilitate growth of the
network by making it easy to add additional subnets.  Furthermore,
X.400 can support various types of electronic messaging, including
electronic mail, FAX, Telex and even Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
This capability  allows you to leverage the same X.400 network to serve
a variety of needs.

Why HP's X.400 Messaging Backbone Solution?

Network Management:  HP X.400 nodes can be configured and managed from
any other HP node within the backbone.  HP's X.400 products also
include facilities for threshold monitoring so you will know when nodes
need maintenance.  In addition, information is available for the
creation of billing data, to allow you to charge user groups for use of
the X.400 backbone.

Application Access:  HP allows users of HP Desk, HP OpenMail and almost
any UNIX* based electronic mail system to access X.400.  In addition,
HP will offer a programmatic interface to allow other applications,
such as EDI, FAX or Telex, to access the X.400 network.

Directories:   Enterprise-wide messaging is not feasible unless you
know the address of the recipient of your message.  To help solve this
problem, HP offers distributed directories for electronic mail for both
the MPE and HP-UX environments.  But, as multivendor messaging becomes
common, standards for directories become necessary.  HP is committed to
the X.500 directory standard and we have included it in our products
since 1989.

Ease of Installation:  An X.400 network is only useful if it is up and
running.  Because installing any network can be challenging, HP
provides a full set of tools to help simplify and speed up the
implememtation of your X.400 network so it can go to work for you right
away.

Worldwide Support:  When you are running a worldwide or even country
wide network, you need to be able to get help quickly and responsively.
